Hybrid between human and animal, the performance evokes Iara: the river mermaid from Amazonian indigenous mythology. Rafa Bqueer drags across the floor, trying to swim without water. Between enchantment and indictment, the work becomes an urgent reflection on drying rivers and climate breakdown. The performance is followed by an artist talk on the exhibited photo series "De-Domestication".
Rafa Bqueer is a Black trans multimedia artist from Belém, Brazil. Through performance, photography, and drag, Rafa challenges Eurocentric symbols of power and makes Afro-Brazilian and queer bodies visible in art and public space.
